More Speculation About Kate Middleton’s Dress

The May issue of British Vogue is all bridal in honor of the bride Kate — er, sorry, Catherine Middleton, whose wedding to Prince William on April 29 has everyone playing a daily guessing game about her dress and tiara. The magazine features three separate covers: Freja Beha Erichsen in a silk faille Oscar de la Renta gown; Lara Stone in a delicate Bruce Oldfield; and Natalia Vodianova in a draped Vivienne Westwood dress with a tulle bolero. Mario Testino photographed the piece, called “Wedding Belles.”

Ah, but no McQueen dress in the mix, its absence raising speculation that maybe Sarah Burton, the creative director of McQueen, is making Ms. Middleton’s dress after all. In early March, Ms. Burton brushed off a report in a London newspaper that the house had received the commission for the dress. The company has certainly been busy making clothes for guests attending the Costume Institute gala on May 2, in honor of the late designer and his work.

According to press reports, Alexandra Shulman, the editor in chief of British Vogue, gave dress advice to Ms. Kate Middleton after her engagement, recommending McQueen. Well, the choice would make sense. The house makes beautiful clothes, it has the workroom and staff to deal with a high-profile wedding, and the label is contemporary. Meanwhile, The Telegraph today noted that Ms. Kate Middleton “played it safe” for her last official appearance before the wedding, visiting a school in Lancashire with William. She wore a coordinated navy dress and fitted jacket. (Source)
